Zeroa is finally Home

This morning, Mon, a co-church worker and friend died of lung cancer. I fondly call him Zeroa, name of the choir angel character he played in our last year’s Christmas play. His mom is currently suffering from breast cancer and late last year another friend’s mom also died of lung cancer. Could it be that the incidence of cancer is increasing? Besides these people I know a couple more having the same disease including ex-president Cory Aquino who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. I’ve had enough of this disease. From now on, I will be including in my prayers that the cure for cancer be found. I am through trying to understand why “bad things happen to good people”. I am just trusting God that He is still in control and sovereign.

Jovial and passionate, Mon was a true worshiper. Sunday after Sunday, he encouraged the congregation to give praises due to the King of kings as he lead praise and worship. He was an example to our youth and an inspiration to those around him. I always sensed the Lord’s approval in his life. Ultimately, he was a lover of God. The cancer was only diagnosed early this year. Of course everyone prayed for his healing. During Saturdays, our prayer warriors laid their hands upon him. We were all expecting a miracle of healing. Nonetheless two days ago, he was rushed to the hospital and died after 24 hours.

I will never forget the countless times you made me laugh and the way you ushered all of us in the awesome presence of God. I STILL BELIEVE IN MIRACLES, MON. You are one to me. THIS IS NOT THE END because I know the life you lived will continue to create ripples of goodness, love and hope.

…Today Zeroa leads the saints in worshipping the Love of his life. I will miss you, Mon

Love,

ate Wendy

For love? Yes, it’s worth it!

“Don’t ever get married…” was my mom’s advice after a fight with my dad. I didn’t think she was serious but her suggestion appealed to me. With the financial crisis in our country these days her advice seemed practical. Young as I was, I decided to take it and vowed to be an old maid. Who needs a husband to complicate life anyway? I preferred a simple and inconvenient living. If I get lonely, I’d get a dog or something. If I decide to become a mom, I’ll adopt an orphan. It sounded like a good plan.

When I met Butch (now my husband), I discovered what was it like to fall for someone- that fuzzy, warm feeling and excitement of being in love. You know, times when you just can’t wipe the smile off your face after speaking with him for hours and hours on the phone. Moments of pure elation! I believed we were soul mates. We were so alike and compatible. I even thought of him as my guy version. Soon, I forgot my spinsterhood plan.

Then, it happened. After two years of going steady, the quarreling began- over the phone (times like those I hated Sun Cellular for having a 24/7 talk all you can promo it sure facilitated our arguments!), in the sidewalk (yeah, even in public), in my office- I mean a lot. Our differences just started to surface. During those fights I was the one who would give up easily and call it quits. But somehow our relationship went on because Butch never gave up on me.

In our fourth year, he proposed and I said yes. I was very much in love with him I couldn’t refuse. But as our wedding day drew nearer,I noticed our fights became more frequent. I remembered my mom’s warning years ago. We even broke up a couple of times because of my attitude. Did I really want to share a space with a person having a totally different upbringing? Imagine the endless bickering! In the midst of my ambivalence the Lord spoke to me. He said…

“Dying and suffering for you is worth it because I know when you realize how much I love you, you’d reciprocate that love. You, loving me back is my greatest joy!! I’d do it all again even for a thousand times.”

His Words just wiped all my doubts away. Last January 13, 2007 we finally got married. I knew there would be tons of inconvenient adjustments to make, and like any marriage there will be problems. But like how Butch fought for our relationship when I was about to give up and how the Lord chose to die for me, I knew my love for him was worth fighting for. The ill-feelings I have when we fight fade away when I compare it to the utmost joy I feel when I am with him.

We’ve been married for a year now. Yes, we argue. The most ridiculous so far would be if the love songs during the 80’s were much better than the love songs these days. Funny I know.

With God’s grace we are learning to sort out our differences mostly by compromising. Because when you love someone no task is too hard and it is always worth the fight. LOVE is never practical. After all, it cost the blood of the Son of Man.

P.S. I know, the picture has kinda nothing to do with the post but its my current favorite photo by Butch taken in Manila Bay , Mall of Asia. Hope you guys like it and always remember to FIGHT FOR THE ONES YOU LOVE.

A vision without action is a daydream. Stop dreaming. Just do it.

I read this quote from Butch’s inbox the other day “A vision without action is a daydream. An action without a vision is a nightmare…” It reminded me to never stop working on my dreams no matter how impossible I think it is. Both Darlene Zschech and Bo Sanchez (two of the most inspiring persons I know) highly recommend writing down your dreams. I think this is logical because it will help you focus on what you want. It gives you proper direction thus preventing you from putting effort on things you don’t really want.

Now I shall write my own down…
• To be the best wife
• To be the best mother
• To travel in England and China
• To maintain a blog that will inspire others to have genuine relationship with Jesus. Thus this blog.
• To have an English cottage and an English garden (of course in England) I’ve always daydreamed of picking flowers in a beautiful English garden as a child.
And for the really challenging one…
• To create a ministry that will dramatically change the lives of street children and street dwellers in Cubao (the town where my church is located).

The book “Being Happy” states this “you gravitate in the direction of your dominant thoughts…” meaning you literally attract what you think about constantly. So it is helpful to write your goals and to think about it always.

I noticed that stories of spiritual giants in the Bible starts with a vision, dream or a promise from God. And that would be the start of their great adventure with the Him. Abraham was promised an entire nation of descendants; Joseph had dreams of becoming an important ruler, and Moses was destined to lead the Israelites out of slavery.

If you don’t have a dream, start with what you love doing. If you dedicate this to God and do it for His Glory alone, He will equip you in fulfilling it. God planted a dream in your heart that matches your natural abilities. He knows you inside out. Before you were even born, He already knew what your dreams will be.

Once, I racked my brain about what I really wanted to do in life. I wanted so much for my goals to be aligned to His. That time, I was feeling dissatisfied with my job and strongly felt that the Lord was calling me to do something else. So I resigned, prayed, fasted, read my Bible, and meditated desperately wanting an answer. He didn’t for a long time until one day He simply said “Tell me what YOU WANT and we will work on it TOGETHER…” What?! I was expecting a specific action. However, He asked me to follow my heart and do what I WANTED and even said that WE WILL WORK ON IT TOGETHER!!

When we dedicate our dreams to God, We become PARTNERS with Him in building His kingdom after all as John 15:15 says “I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends…” Isn’t that amazing!

A warning though, fulfilling your dream will entail getting out of your comfort zone and taking risks. It requires faith and trusting God. Abraham left his comfortable homeland to obey God in search of this unknown promise land. Nevertheless, he trusted the Lord. The bigger your dream the greater faith it requires.

Start Small. But think big.
No matter how small, do something that will contribute in accomplishing it. Start with something really doable for you. Then follow it up with another action then another. If you do this and commit it, you’ll be surprised how far it will take you one step at a time closer to your dream. I know creating the ministry for street dwellers will be a huge task requiring great skill and effort. But starting small, I am going to interview a social worker that deals with street dwellers and do some volunteer work. From there I will do another action based on what I’ve learned.

What I mentioned are just SOME of my dreams. But let me tell you what the biggest is … making my God smile everyday and to be remembered as a person who LOVED and fought for LOVE when I leave this world. Because there is absolutely no point if all my dreams would come true if I have not loved at all.

So what are you waiting for? Write down your dreams (be really specific! It helps), dedicate it to the Lord, think about it constantly and start doing something about it. Stop dreaming and as Nike’s ad says “JUST DO IT”
